Bethel Park resident named Middle States Teaching Professional of the Year

janice-irwin-trib1

Success as the founder and longtime head of the Upper St. Clair Tennis Development Program has earned Janice Irwin a prestigious regional award.

Irwin, 58, of Bethel Park was named the 2014 United States Tennis Association Middle States Teaching Professional of the Year.

One of the association's 17 sections, Middle States consists of Pennsylvania, Delaware, northwestern West Virginia and parts of New Jersey.

Irwin was honored at an awards dinner this month in Pine, where she also received the Allegheny Mountain District Teaching Professional of the Year Award.

Allegheny Mountain, which is composed of 24 Western Pennsylvania counties and four in northwestern West Virginia, is one of six districts in Middle States.

In more than 30 years as an instructor, Irwin said she has lost count of the youngsters she guided who have gone to compete for NCAA Division I schools and other colleges.

Former students include women's professional player Alison Riske, an ex-Peters Township High School standout who began training under Irwin at age 7.

Today, Irwin oversees 300 boys and girls, about 60 to 80 who are United States Tennis Association junior players.

Two of her players, Kristi Riley (girls 18 singles) and Lauren Carey (girls 14 doubles), ranked first among Allegheny Mountain District competitors last year.

Irwin said she was pleasantly surprised to be honored by the section as well as the district.

Middle States spokesman Michael Gladysz said Irwin was an easy choice for the section award.

"She's a great leader in the Pittsburgh tennis community (who) has really become an integral part of that area over the years," Gladysz said. (She) is so well respected amongst her peers."

South Xtra: Upper St. Clair senior goes that extra mile to improve

SPO-8-charlotte-madson-600

Charlotte Madson logged more miles than most truckers this summer.

She started off with a Level 4 sectional tournament in Philadelphia in May, had a Level 3 sectional in Mercersburg, competed in the National Collegiate Clay Court Championships in Mt. Lebanon in July, the USTA National Clay Court Championships in Memphis and the USTA National Warm-Up Tournament in Lakewood, Calif.

If that weren't enough, she competed in the USTA Level 1 National Championships for girls 16 and 18 Aug. 1 in San Diego, then finished the summer with another Level 4 sectional tournament last weekend in Philadelphia, an event she won, with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Katherine Hughes of New Jersey, her doubles partner at the event.

"It was crazy," Madson said. "But it was fun."

Heading out on the road is something that Madson has become accustomed to over the years. Her wanderlust also has her looking outside of Western Pennsylvania for colleges as she's deciding from, among others, Davidson, Richmond, William & Mary and Maryland.

"I have my top five, but hopefully I'll find out soon," Madson said. "I love all the schools I'm looking at and I was hoping to go somewhere new. I used to live in California and I thought I wanted to go out there, but I want something new and I want to stay on the East Coast and I'm excited to go on a new adventure."

Until she departs, the Upper St. Clair senior will have to deal with the smaller escapades nearer to home, like competing in the WPIAL Class AAA singles finals on Sept. 21-22. Last season, Madson finished second to Ananya Dua of Shady Side Academy in the tournament, then was knocked out in the state semifinals by North Allegheny's Anna Li and had to settle for third.

This time, though, the No. 4-ranked senior in the state is looking for a nicer finish on her medal than silver or bronze.

"I'm really just focusing on being back in the WPIALs and hopefully going back to states and I'm working with my coach [Renee Russell] on just staying positive and hitting deeper and mental strength and physical strength," Madson said. "But I'm just hoping to keep looking forward and not looking at the opponent, but just improve and hopefully I'll find myself in Hershey this year."

A Quote from Allison

"Usctdp and Janice Irwin were there for me since my very first private lesson. I was so lucky to have such a nurturing, yet disciplined tennis setting for my developmental years. I learned a lot about tennis during my time here, but I also learned a lot about life because Janice cares so much for each of her students. Every one at USCTDP cares deeply about everyone they work with and that is what sets them apart."
